This should be required reading not only for potential colorists, but anyone that takes videography, cinematography or video editing seriously. Hurkman is a pro in the industry, and you can tell by how she approaches and treats color issues. As a videographer and editor, i have spent years trying to learn the craft/art of color correction and grading, and it's safe to say that I never came close to being comfortable coloring a video or feeling like the corrections i was making were "right". Until i read this book. She blows the door wide open and goes through things from the ground up. I'm the type of person that likes to know "why". Just because the internet says that I should do "x" to a shot is not reason enough for me to do it. Hurkman takes it from the basic basic, explaining how color works, both in the real world, and especially within the rhelm of video, how it depends on the camera, codec, color space, monitor, end delivery, etc.But don't think that this book is JUST for industry pros. If anything, this is a great book for amateur and intermediate media creators because it essentially allows you to skip a few steps and come out ahead. Not that you don't have to put the work in, but like i said, i put years into tutorials, reading articles, and playing with grading applications. It wasn't until this book that i started to know exactly where to start with my images, and start to make them look better and more balanced than ever before. Even if you're shooting with a Canon DSLR, GH4, Sony Mirrorless, this book is invaluable. It explains things in a way that is cross-program. If you work with Resolve, Adobe, Apple, Avid, whatever... everything in this book is equally applicable. Do yourself a favor and read this, then read it again.
Alexis Van Hurkman wrote the book on DaVinci Resolve. No really, he actually wrote the manual. So he knows his stuff. When it comes to color correction, it's hard to find a guy or gal who can teach you more. What's great about this book is that not only is it a great read with awesome illustrated visuals and photos (as color accurate as possible through printing), but it's also a great handy reference to refer to while working or out in the field.I also recommend Alexis Van Hurkman's master classes online through RippleTraining, in which he goes into greater depth at a hands-on approach, but also offers new features in Resolve 14 as well as the chance to sit down with him through working one of his color correction and color grading of a real short film -- amazing watching him work and learning hands-on as well to accompany this text. Definitely buy it, I got mine used for a great price.
After years of photography (including the "good old days" in the darkroom processing film and making prints), the fact that cameras come with good quality video options has led me to be more serious about video making. The inclusion of SpeedGrade in Adobe's CC subscription provided me with a tool to actually do some serious grading of that video... but how? I've dug into several resources, such as Adobe's Classroom in a Book for SpeedGrade, and now this book. As someone who is a novice to video grading, but experienced with photo "grading" this book did an excellent job covering all the basics from the point of view of digital video/film grading. It did a nice job of being application-agnostic, focusing on the fundamentals that all of these programs work on. I would strongly recommend it as a starting point for anyone interested in beginning grading or moving from rudimentary work to actually understanding what they are doing. The inclusion of SpeedGrade for Adobe subscribers and the availability of the powerful "Lite" version of DaVinci Resolve from Blackmagic means that the tools to improve your video are easily available, and this book will get you from zero to having a good shot at turning basically good footage into fairly stunning images. That said, I wish that the content from the author's companion "Look Book" was included with this one. I gladly would have paid more for one complete volume. This book covers the fundamentals, but the companion book covers how to turn base footage into more stylized imagery, such as various "film looks".
